Hybrid Learning: A Paradox of Hard and Hope-filled

In March of 2020, when I quickly found myself teaching 100% remotely in a shelter in place world, I reached for my trusty copy of Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities and read the classic “It was it best of times, it was the worst of times” opening passage to my students.  Cliché? Sure, but it was my first remote discussion with my students, and I needed to draw connection, relevance, and immediacy of the present.  I also wanted to establish that no matter what, we could continue to ground our interactions in the study of literature and all its complexities.  Given the complex nature of education, it can feel like hybrid teaching has always been what we do as educators; in other ways, Hybrid teaching is like nothing anyone has ever experienced before.  Trying to navigate the tensions of hybrid teaching is much like being constantly faced with the paradoxical complexities of life and literature. ...
