When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka reviewed by Joanna B. This is a novella-length book that tells the story of an anonymous Japanese family sent to internment camps in the 1940s. Otsuka’s writing style often blurs the lines between poetry and prose, and she structures the novel in a unique way which shifts the focus from this specific family to the experiences of Japanese families at large.
