Also a personal note: Homegoing is the best new novel I have read in the last decade; I cannot recommend it enough. My students enjoy this novel because it speaks to cultural values and story elements they can relate to; the pacing of the story keeps them engaged; the descriptive details of characters’ physical and mental attributes. Most importantly students love the common bloodline that flows through each character who only know fragments of their true lineage, especially as more generations ensue. Overall Homegoing is rich in detail; it depicts the culture and society of each time period, and authentically develops this African family tree. There are so many literary aspects that can be developed through this novel, whether you teach the entire text or just excerpts; however, I do focus and do activities that focus on some ...
