With our pack of memories Slung slack on our backs We venture into the circle Of destruction, Which is the circle Of creation And make more— “Memory Sack” by Joy Harjo, (page 97 in An American Sunrise, 2019) Have student read the poem aloud in a conga line reading although you could have students switch readers at the end of each line or at the end of each punctuation mark rather than at the end of each sentence due to the lack of end punctuation. Ask students what they noticed. At least one student should note the repetition of “circle,” and maybe others will extend that into a spiral, a continuation, or even an ouroboros.
