Encouraging Reading for Pleasure

At the beginning of each semester (we’re on block schedule), we read the AP Lit course description as a class and discuss it. One of my students said something this week that I cannot shake. She said (rough paraphrase), “I like that this description notes reading for pleasure. In my English classes, we’ve never really talked about reading for pleasure; it’s always about finding literary devices and talking about themes.” As a teacher I want my students to learn how to “read closely, think critically, and write analytically.” I purposely design lessons to unpack skills which will help students enter a text and make meaning which should in turn aid in their enjoyment of literature. I’m currently in a “book club” with a few teachers who are reading Invisible Man; we dig deep and talk about all the things in this book. This is good.
