As promised, in addition to my first day lesson, here are a few more Day One lesson ideas which are AMAZING! I so appreciate Lisa Boyd and Valerie Withers who teach in Henry County GA outside of Atlanta for sharing this first activity: “For Julia, in Deep Water” Poem Puzzle Activity Day 1: Cut two copies of the poem lines in to strips and sort strips by stanzas. (“For Julia, in Deep Water” with punctuation removed for activity) Divide students in to 6 groups and give each group a stanza to construct. After each group finishes, the two groups with the same stanza collaborate to come up with a final order for each stanza. Post the three stanzas around the room and allow students to walk through and choose the order of the stanzas. Expect thoughtful and amazing conversations throughout this process.
