I’ve noticed over my 20+ years of teaching that students are more prone to anxiety. This article from the National Education Association and this one from the Washington Post, both pre-pandemic. Covid, quarantine, and virtual/hybrid learning have only intensified feelings and emotions often leaving students paralyzed to act. Teachers must now more than ever be attuned our students mental health and build in self-awareness opportunities in class. One activity I do with seniors each year is “What’s on Your Plate” where students literally write responsibilities, extra curricular activities, obligations, etc. on a paper plate then think of two to three action steps to help manage their load. I model this for them and talk about things I do to cope. This year, we made adjustments for virtual learning where students recorded in their writer’s notebook.
